During the CBS News Republican debate on foreign policy last night, candidates sounded alarms over Iran's nuclear capabilities, voiced support for torture, called for zero dollars in foreign aid, and Michele Bachmann praised China's social welfare policies. Chris discusses the debate and the legalization of marijuana, with former New Mexico Governor and Republican presidential candidate Gary Johnson (who was not invited to the debate), Columbia University Law Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, former Obama State Department Director of Policy Planning Anne-Marie Slaughter, and our office neighbor/MSNBC host Martin Bashir.

The study quoted by martin on sunday's show about teens who use marijuana having mental problems later in life is a bogus and flawed study. CK MPP.org or NORML to see how flawed. I could say teens who use coffee before they are 16 have mental health problems in the same way this study does.
Absolutely, and Chris should bring people on from MMP.org and NORML to refute this. It's time that these kind of bogus studies were refuted vigorously. I was astonished when Bashir came out with this, not to mention that nobody is advocating teenagers having access to any drugs (alcohol, tobacco or cannabis). The truth is that they have access now with the added threat to their physical and mental health of a possible arrest record.
Thank you for having Governor Gary Johnson on your show. It was an excellent forum for hearing his views on debate questions from last night. It is very unfair that he and Buddy Roemer are not invited to debates as they are more qualified than many of the candidates put forward by corporate media. I hope you will invite Mr. Roemer onto your show someday soon!
I will be voting for Governor Gary Johnson! Johnson is a Pro-Choice, Pro-Gay rights, Pro-immigration GOP candidate who wants to Legalize Marijuana. He is also good steward of tax dollars. He came into office with a huge deficit and left 8 yrs later with a billion dollar surplus. His staff once asked him how he wanted his name read on the state welcome signs. He said Don't put my name on those signs, If we change them at all put welcome to New Mexico from the citizens of New Mexico so we dont have to spend money to change them in the future. As Governor he raised the speed limit to 75 on the highway and allowed people to buy beer on Sunday saying "this is a choice the people of New Mexico can make for themselves and don't need the govt telling them on what day they can buy beer." He understand the proper role of govt to protect you from force or fraud but to otherwise leave you alone unless your actions interfere with the rights of another. Check out Two term(one more than Mitt) Governor Gary Johnson! Dont let the media pick your candidate! Johnson is socially liberal and fiscally conservative.. Just who we need in the White House. The People's President!
PS- Sorry. Great Show!!!!! Should be mandatory viewing for all High School Seniors! Keep up the good work. As they say in the Air Force, " Carry on, I'll be in the area all day."
This exceptionalism concept is so arrogant... And dangerous. As Chris mentionned, it feeds a desire of conquest and of imposing your values to other countries. I thought you experiment in Iraq would have taught you something...
Your country is in a position to be a very influencial leader; but you exceptionalism is and will be judged on what you do with your leadership position. I think Obama is doing a very good job in restauring your good reputation, but should the Republicans take over, it will be destroyed again. And let's not be naive: arrogance is a major trigger of terrorism. Terrorism has always existed and will never be defeated, but there are actions that can be taken to minimize the risk of being a target. Tolerance is one of them.
By the way, Chris, your show is amazing - I wake up to watch it :)
China does not have social nets and 'China is growing', like Michelle Bachmann said... It is growing but the people are dying from poverty and exploitation. Workers work 7 days a week and get paid basically nothing. A model? REALLY?????
This woman will make my head explode...
The concept and practice of using marijuana as medicine has been around for over 3000 years. Not one death due to marijuana use has ever been recorded. Up until 1937 hundreds of medicines whose base ingredient was marijuana were approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA). The FDA was created in the wake of the 1914 Harrison Act which began the regulation of drugs and the patent medicines made from them. The 1937 Marijuana Tax Stamp Act, which made marijuana a Federal crime, was designed to prohibit the possession and use of marijuana in such a way that you had to break the law in order to comply with it. The law required one to possess the marijuana to get a tax stamp for it, but if you are in possession of the marijuana , you have already broken the law. This hated law was declared unconstitutional in 1970. In it’s wake was created the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. This bill is also flawed and probably unconstitutional. The bill requires the Drug Czar to misinform the citizens about any drug listed as Schedule 1 in the arbitrary rating schedule of drugs and their dangers. This rating system is questionable because synthetic copies of schedule 1 drugs are listed as schedule 2 and can be prescribed by a doctor. Most of these ‘copies’ are less well tolerated than the drugs they are designed to replace.
There is something inherently wrong about a law that requires such a high ranking public official to mislead the citizens. This has led to such ridiculous scenes as the Drug Czar, Mr. Gil Kerlikowske, standing in San Francisco after fifteen years of medical marijuana in California, and proclaiming that marijuana is dangerous and has no medical value. Does anyone wonder why the Federal Government is considered unreliable when it comes to drug facts? The government’s credibility has been destroyed by it’s inability to tell the truth when it comes to drugs or the success or failure of current drug policy.
As long as this requirement to mislead the citizens is in place, we will not be able to have the honest discussion needed to for us to move forward on the issues of drugs and drug law. Currently the American Medical Association is calling for marijuana to be rescheduled to allow for it’s use as medicine. Sixteen states and Washington DC have medical marijuana laws and polling nationwide is 82% in favor of medical marijuana. The only thing standing in the way are the unrealistic and untrue pronouncements of the Drug Czar and his fellow prohibitionists.
Congress should pass an amendment to the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 that requires the Drug Czar to tell the whole truth about drugs and cease this ridiculous charade. Until then the propaganda and misinformation continue unabated.
There are many of Gary Johnson's positions with which I do not agree. At the same time he is being treated unfairly by the R party, the media, etc. The grotesque carnival of incompetents being currently paraded before the American people is insulting.
I would listen to a debate between Huntsman, Roemer, Johnson, and Corporate Candidate #1 Romney. Corporate Candidate #2 Cain is a temporary distraction.
Why is Romney determined to run for President in a country which clearly rejects his candidacy? Is he just having fun and networking while making money?
I have been a huge fan of Gov Johnson when I learned of his acomplishments as Governor of NM. One of the many things I like about the Gov is his acceptance of everyone equaly regardless of their political beliefs. This video shows that quality about him very clearly. While Gov Johnson may have disagreed with the other guests on some issues he still showed them respect and made attempts to find commin ground and in doing so showed that we can all work together towards a commin goal. Thats what leadership is all about. Its not about arrogance and bullying the others into submition.
Some of our best presidents have been men of the people and not of one particular political party or group. They have held the view that what makes the country great is that we all have the right to the pursuit of our happiness. That we truely are all created equal. That only each individual person is best to choose whats right for them and no government can possibly provide the same amount of hapiness and pleasure that a free man can. If the current circus we see in the political arena is any indication of that then its time to try something different in our selection of our next President. We need someone who looks at the issues outside of politics and with a rational objective mind. With solutions that fix the root cause of the problem and don't only relieve the effects of the problem.
Our country is at a crossroads of either accepting that a select few large corporations can choose who we elect as our next president or that the American people decide that for themselves. It is clear that the establishment will choose candidates that will enshure that the power stays in their hands at the expence of the opportunities for everyone else.
Gov Johnson is the best hope we have in restoring sanity to our Government.
