-Brett Brownell (@brettbrownell) is video and web producer for Up with Chris Hayes which airs on MSNBC Saturday and Sunday morning.

Bret, why does it take so long, especially on Sunday, to get the video clips online?
Sometimes they are fairly quick and other times it can be well after noon ET before they are available.
It would be really convenient if they were uploaded as soon as possible after each hour of the program ends.
Thanks for seeing what you can do to speed the upload along!
love your show Chris! Even if I have to get up at 4 am to catch it! yes, I record it, but like watching it live and re-listen to make sure I catch everything.
p.s. show us pics of your little one - at least 1 every weekend (please!)
I appreciated the fact that you invited Amy Goodman on your show this week. She contributes a much needed perspective and would be a great addition as a regular guest.
The Catholic
Church needs to learn its own morality and practice what it preaches. No “EMPLOYER”
should be allowed to use the religious argument to bi-pass laws that define the
rights of individuals. Otherwise, they can claim that slavery is in their
religion and therefore are exempt from the 13th amendment. They can
also claim to submit people to religious punishment such as stoning and crucifixions.
MHP is so right. This only becomes a problem because of this bizarre conjunction of health care and employment in America. The Catholic Church is saying that just because someone works for them (sweeping up, or whatever) the Church should have control over whether that janitor is allowed to get birth control.
Mitch Daniels...actually all conservative NFL fans...should remember the Super Bowl players are union members. They should also know that the NFL's success is due to socialism. There's a great animation explaining the socialismm concept at Vimeo by Fraser Davidson, titled Bill Maher-Irritable Bowl Syndrome.
I love this show and only wish it had been longer. The U.S. position to absolutely prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear nation distresses me. We need more open discussion of whether Iran desires a nuclear weapon for aggression or for deterrence . The fears about Pakistan and China developing nuclear weapons haven't materialized. I wonder if Iran might become a better neighbor if it felt more secure.
I also hope you'll directly address abortion in future programs. MHP brought up the important point that women's freedom is dependent on reproductive freedom. The GOP will try to ignore it in the general elections but, if they win, abortion will be at the top of their agenda. The attack on women's freedom and unions is the big lesson from 2010 and I believe the Democratic Party would see major victories by making abortion a key campaign issue this year. I'd love to hear from the experts.
Yes yes, UP is a decent show getting better. I suggest MSNBC watch Moyers & Co to see how real journalists act.
2-3-12
Jonathan Haidt on Moyers & Co.
Civil responsibility
Tribal team based loyalty
Talks about welfare state but doesn’t mention subsidies for the wealthy
Jonathan Haidt’s thesis doesn’t hold water down here in the trenches where 47 MILLION Americans struggle below the poverty level. VICTIMS of the greed stricken, power mad domestic and foreign policies of the RIGHT. Please tell something, ANYTHING that would make me want to compromise with these Republican FOOLS.
Compromise becomes a dirty word when the people you’re trying deal with are insane. How THIS for contentious mofo’s:
MY SIDE IN THIS DEBATE:
* Conservatives hate the government helping poor Americans but you people have no problem giving billions in subsidies and tax breaks to a bunch of corrupt, Wealthy, silver spoon aristocrats. Would Haliburton or Blackwater even exist without our tax dollars? What about Michele Bachmann getting farm subsidies or Mitt Romney devastating communities after they gave his companies tax breaks and funding?
Ok, I admit there’s a small minority of Americans who are lazy sponges who’d rather get drunk or do drugs than pay rent or get a job. I think this has more to do with reckless economic policy and the War on Drugs, both HUGE failures under the Conservative CONTROL by AUTHORITY mind set. Not to mention the many lower class families were ruined by casualties of the foolish Bush/Cheney wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
REALITY NOW!
What leadership, character or morals have Republicans displayed since Obama/Biden was elected? Did these so-called “great americans” ever considered that the Obama Administration has been stuck cleaning up the huge debt mess Bush/Cheney left for American people?
NO solutions, NO rational stance, clear agendas or common sense policy… JUST Sarah Palin/Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh groupies parroting talking points!
Have you ever LISTENED to the average right-wing fanatic? It’s like every Conservative in America is auditioning for a spot on the FOX News channel. (News Corp owned by Saudi Royals)
COME ON, are you Republican voters #*~/‘n INSANE? Am I missing something here? Didn’t Conservatives just have 8 YEARS of Bush/Cheney and Republican controlled Congress (1994-2006) to put their warped ideology into practice? AND IT ALMOST DESTROYED THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH!
Waste, fraud, abuse, scandal, sexual deviancy, corruption, lies, incompetence, job outsourcing, off-shore tax evasion, reckless economics, welfare for the rich, deregulation, war profiteering, Constitutional violations AND a Corporate Crime Wave of epic proportions…. The WORST looting of a nation’s wealth and resources in the history of MANKIND!
Where was the Tea Party anger THEN? #*~/ ignorant hypocrites.
But you want Democrats/Progressives to believe if only Conservatism had one more chance it can work? The very definition of insanity, isn’t IT? Over and over AGAIN! Just separate yourselves from Bush/Cheney… bull$#!~ MISINFORMED, mentally deficient people into believing they’re part of a NEW Conservative Movement. (read “Pity the Billionaire” by Thomas Frank)
In OTHER WORDS Republican Party talking points are based on the ignorance of their constituents. They revise history and LIE because they CAN… because morons who vote for Republicans DON’T KNOW THEIR OWN HISTORY! This ain’t NO Tea Party… this is a CLASS WAR! Do I miss George W. Bush? #*~/ NO!
Haidt said Progressives don’t make as good an argument as Conservatives but that’s because voices such as my own are ignored. I’m ready to push myself upon the American scene weather all you Ivory Tower @$$holes like or not. Read and follow the links for all the TRUTH one needs to be a moral human who loves the USA.

“I think we need to focus on those in the TOP 1% who made their fortunes on the backs of American workers… with American ingenuity, technology, ideas… using infrastructure paid for by the American taxpayer… And how did they repay us? The silver spoon, trust fund baby m’f***er’s moved all our jobs to Asia, fouled our environment with stuff that would make a bill goat puke and turned our politicians into a stable of high priced prostitutes. To be honest a few fanatics who’ve perverted Islam don’t scare me near as much as those FOOLS that believe capitalism can survive without ETHICS, RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY
Concerned Citizens educate themselves to the ways of TRUE debate, righteous anger, argument, etc. We’ve all read THE text on this subject and know about the “Opposing Viewpoints Series” (Bender/Leone) put out by Greenhaven Press:
“It can be said that those who do not completely understand their adversary’s point of view do not fully understand their own“ DAVID L. BENDER
Health care through a religious organization affects more than the employee. Plans covers families, and when married couples have different religions, it affects the ability of the spouse of the employee to freely exercise their religious beliefs. the analogy that is real is religions that don't believe in transfusions. If a non-believer spouse gets emergency care and is not allowed to receive a transfusion, that directly affects the life and liberty of that person. Religion is a PERSONAL choice, not an institutional choice. The institution can only make things available, the actual use is up to the individual. Forcing of an institutional decision onto and forcing individuals to comply is unconstitutional. If their message (and control) of members was anywhere near as strong as they would want, there would be no need to limit what was available, their members would simply not partake.
It seems that some practical cures based on stem cells may be reality sooner than we expected. Will Catholic employers be required to pay for insurance that covers such treatments? Perhaps birth control seems like a morally defensible exclusion (the users are after all hedonists, if not outright fornicators), and one that many employees can pay for individually. But stem cell based treatment may affect those injured by accidents or genetic chance, and may be prohibitively expensive for an individual. Will we allow the religious beliefs of the employer to impose a death sentence on their employees?
Calling your Catholic guest a "genial papist" - really? To my ear, "papist" sounds like a disparaging term. Every dictionary I could find identifies it as "usually disparaging." In this age when we cannot even say slurs in order to denounce other people for using them (eg the letter-between-m-and-o-word), this seems insensitive. I would like to recommend your show to my Catholic friends as an intelligent liberal show, but I can't if you're going to use language that will make the feel excluded, much less belittled.
Particular kudos for having Amy Goodman on as a guest. Can't wait for MHP's new show.
I don't think any Catholics would be offended by the word "papist." It's a slur, but it's archaic and therefore funny -- either intentionally, as with Chris, or unintentionally, as with certain hardcore anti-Catholic fundamentalists. And I'm a Catholic; I wasn't offended, and I've never found the term offensive. And I've never known a Catholic who did.
I think it's an interesting question. I checked with a Catholic friend (who is an I-would-be-a-liberal-except-for-the-abortion-issue) and they thought that conservative Catholics, who may be sensitive about perceived anti-Catholicism, would find it offensive. If that is true, it may be a word worth avoiding if we want to have any chance of talking across the political divide (which MSNBC hosts always claim they want to do).
Just lookin' to increase the chances of our positions being heard...
