In today’s first hour we covered the Nevada caucus results where Mitt Romney won easily, the government crackdown on protestors in Syria, the standoff between Israel and Iran, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s reversal of their decision to stop providing funding to Planned Parenthood.
Joining Chris were Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, host of MSNBC’s newest show "Melissa Harris-Perry" which premieres February 18th at 10AM EST Melissa Harris-Perry, senior national security reporter for Newsweek / The Daily Beast Eli Lake, former director of policy planning for the U.S. Department of State and Princeton University professor Anne-Marie Slaughter and senior contributing writer for Newsweek / The Daily Beast Michelle Goldberg.

Eli Lake said Iran was given ample requests to allow "the West" to enrich their uranium for them but they never accepted that option. Therefore, the issue isn't really about them having uranium, but rather it is about Western corporations being allowed to profit from Iran's use of it.
THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY and VULTURE'S PICNIC are two great books to read. Two other educational and eye-opening books are THE SHOCK DOCTRINE by Naomi Klein and CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HITMAN by John Perkins.
Amy Goodman's point that the U.S. can use the money we as a nation give to Israel as leverage for stopping behavior we disapprove of was spot on. Prof. Slaughter's attempt to dismiss Ms. Goodman's point by saying Israel continues to build settlements we disapprove of fell flat in the face of the fact that we have not withheld or threatened to withhold funds from Israel. Also, Eli Lake, who appeared at times contentious towards Ms. Goodman, said our power is in our UN veto power; yet, it was China and Russia who blocked a measure to hold Syria to account for its murder of citizens. Once again, the U.S. took a position for Israel's protection despite our diplomatic ties with Syria.
Thank you, Chris, for having insightful guests like Amy Goodman and Melissa Harris-Perry on your program. My husband and I are looking forward to Melissa's new show on your network.
What a great decission. Brillent to hear several knowlegable perspectives, and in a respectful way.
It was certainly great seeing Amy Goodman on Up; hope she appears many more times.
I recommend anyone wanting more depth on Syria than is normally seen in mainstream news to watch Democracy Now's Feb. 7 interview with Patrick Seale. His perspective seems to be unbiased and he talks about the complexity of the politics in the area. Every other news report I've seen presents current events in Syria strictly though the lens of the official U.S. perspective. Democracy Now's reporting is totally sober and non-ideological but completely undercuts the validity of the present official U.S. moral outrage -- and does so without advocating that "the other guys" (Asad, Russia, China) are in the right.
Don,t have cabel found out about up w/ chris from democracy now web sight. so glad you had amy on or i would not know of you or mellisa,s upcoming show. liked her first time i heard her on bill moyers. hope you also run her show on the web. thanks kelly kid for book recamendations.
I loved hearing the representative of the Israeli embassy, Eli Lake. He has the knowedge of an Israeli, very impessive. Amy Goodman added depth and intelligence to the discussion demostrating the hypocracy of the U.S. when it kidnanps people to be sent to Syria to be tortured. I was glued to your program for two hours. If Amy Goodman is on, it'll be a good and infomative program.
It appears that Amy Goodman stands out as a journalist with facts, rather than one-sided talking points, as demonstrated by the other panelists. That includes Chris Hayes.
This shows the difference between corporate media, as opposed to investigative journalism.
I vote for DemocracyNow! My scource for news I can believe in.
Eli Lake is a prevaricator. Plain and simple.
Amy Goodman is without a doubt one of the greatest heroes of modern journalism alive today. Chris Hayes deserves props for having her on air, and as all of these comments point out, should continue booking her at every opportunity. MSNBC is making a good start of maintaining relevance in the age of citizen journalism by having people like Goodman and Mark Ames on their broadcast.
What i dislike every time i see any debate on Iran is that people can get away with statements like "i dont think there is anyone that thinks Iran is not making a nuclear weapon". There is this really really high profile NIE when all 16 US intelligence agencies made a join statement that it is their judgement that Iran is NOT trying to get a nuclear weapon. And Mossad made the exact same judgement. So basically every intelligence agency in the US think Iran is not going for weapons, Mossad says Iran is not going for weapons, IAEA says that they have no evidence any nuclear material is being diverted for weapon purposes and people on shows are allowed to pretend like Iran going for nukes is a well known fact. The state of the media totally dismays me.
