Rick Santorum dropped out of the race earlier this week, leaving Mitt Romney the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party. This morning Chris cataloged Mitt Romney's "extreme and/or horrible... policy commitments" and how Chris expects him to begin pivoting to the middle. Plus, guest Mark Bittman returned for more discussion about the latest developments in the world of food politics. And we talked about the national polarization machine in the wake of George Zimmerman's arrest for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Joining Chris were:
Michael Eric Dyson (@michaeledyson), MSNBC political analyst and professor at Georgetown University.
Mark Bittman (@bittman), food columnist at the The New York Times.
Kerry Picket (@kerrypicket), writer for the The Washington Times opinion page.
Amanda Terkel (@aterkel), managing editor and senior political reporter for politics at the The Huffington Post.
Gary Younge (@garyyounge), columnist for The Guardian and The Nation.

Hayes had several interesting exchanges between kerry Picket and Michael Eric Dyson. As a New York born Puerto Rican I found the show's effort to promote Kerry Picket, because her mother is Puerto Rican, as the Latino view on Travon troubling. MSNBC has no Puerto Rican guest or commentators and when it does it brings on a half Puerto Rican republican unrepresentative of the community's view. For the record Puerto Ricans on the most liberal Latino subgroup in the United States. The show also promoted a Black-Brown that does not exist. Most Puerto Ricans and/or Latinos in general would agree with Dyson Why is it that MSNBC has no Puerto Rican guest or commentators unless it is covering Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans have been part of the U.S. for over 100 years and despite four Puerto Rican congressmen, jounalist like Juan Gonzalez, celebrities like Jennifer Lopez MSNBC can't seem to find us. In some ways MSNBC are the media version of George Zimmerman without the Latino escape clause.
Juan Sotomayor
great points
I'm wondering if pols hear more from their white constituents on immigration? Those of us who are appalled at the deportations, round-ups, raids, detentions, family disruption, and horrid hypocrisy of "employers north of the border" who have indirectly and directly trafficked in humans have been writing their officials for years. Maybe this adds to the cognitive dissonance felt by Americans who immigrated years ago?
Mostly your conservative guests are tolerable (to me). Kerry Picket, not so much.
Thank you. I totally agree. I think it is great that Chris is willing to engage with those he has a difference of opinion with. But this woman made my teeth hurt. She even went so far as to suggest that what we DONT know wont hurt us when it comes to ammonia in our meat. Please Chris don't have this person on again.
That's right! Eat pink slime or your school music program will evaporate. Makes perfect sense. Go back to sleep, Kerry.
Please No! Do not let your show turn into a shouting match like so many of your otherwise worthy colleagues. I'm counting on you and Rachel to keep it rationale, funny, even when passions rise. Kerry always went for name-calling. Burns my brain. Cooler nuanced complexity please.
Please, No! Don't let your show go the way of so many of your otherwise worthy colleagues. I depend on you and Rachel for rational, imaginative, funny, even when passions run high or disagreements sharp. Kerry P. went right to namecalling and irrational free association. Ick! Fox does it so much better...
Kerry Picket was the only one promoting herself as a representative of the Puerto Rican community.
I don't get the relevance of her mother being Puerto Rican to the immigration debate. Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
The problem with Ms. Picket is that her comments were unintelligent and not well constructed. This type of guest is unusual for the show and undermines, I suspect, its intent. I hope this is not a harbinger of things to come.
An interesting point of discussion in the future on the hispanic theme is a dissection of the foundation for the white hispanic versus the black or indigenous hispanic. Interestingly, there are genetic correlates for these designations. Such distinctions underlie the partitioning of politics in the caribbean, central america and South America. Interestingly, not in Spain!
I just love how Chris can twist a simple comment by a nominee and make it seem like the federal government should responsible for supporting all non-working families.
If all mothers stayed home, and fathers weren't around, who would pay the government???
Good show. One beef with Betsy's comment on investing in ages 2-5 vs. college. I grew up poor, and received a low quality education at the parachial school in the nearest town. I was never taught to study, or that it mattered -- my father quit school in the 4th grade to work. I was taught to work hard. I did receive a grant and work study in '69 that made college affordable and at age 60, now make an income over 500K and happily pay my share of taxes. Let's be care of 'one size fits all' solutions.
"Chris expects him to begin pivoting to the middle." Everyone expects Mitt to pivot back towards the middle. And everyone knows that his record is moderate. Take this one further. What are going to be the big differences between Romney and Obama. Romney knows it is going to be tough to totally walk the health care reform back. So he can say what ever he wants on this one to collect votes. How different would the lack of accountability be on the sub prime loans and foreclosure fraudsters? Obama and his Dept of Justice have not prosecuted one of them. Not one. We know Romney would have dealt with this the same way. Not one person held accountable for the false pre war intelligence by Obama. Romney would have dealt with this the same way. Iran is going to be one of the big issues. Looks like Romney is going with the neo con crowd the very same folks who lied the US into Iraq. Obama is looking a bit different on this one. But still when sanctions based on unsubstantiated claims looks like the more reasonable approach we know we have seen this picture before.
I'm thinking Obama and team have some fraudster prosecutions up their sleeve to pull out this summer. So Obama can say see I really will go after the fraudster fat cats.
No one jumped on Betsy Stevenson for her outrageous, ageism rant about what she obviously considers to be a false economic position in giving health care to the over 65s - why does society support this she wanted to know, after all as Betsy says with her dismissive Goebbels style 'logic' that ' they have already lived a long time"!!!!
She is allowed to make an outrageous statement like that and all Chris does is react with some embarrassment, smile and just push on regardless???
Stevenson ought to have been countered with some words fro her attack on the old, who I would remind her have worked long and hard, paid taxes and established the world we now live in. And they are now worth nothing to her????
I am disgusted - and disappointed that Chris Hayes let that one go. Shame on him.
The double standard with stay at home moms is true. Dig a little deeper and you will find that low to middle class working moms are the harshest critics of poor stay at home moms. I think it stems from a bit of jealousy because they really don't have a choice - they have to work and can't have that luxury.
If you're poor (and have minimum wage job prospects) you are sometimes financially better off to be on welfare and stay at home with your kids because daycare costs eats up your entire paycheck. If you are low to middle income you're financially better off working and paying for daycare, but often live paycheck to paycheck. If you're upper middle income or higher, you have all the options; you can afford day care, work & have spending money, or you can stay at home and still have spending money.
And of course there is the perception that welfare receipients are "stupid and bad parents, because if they were smart they would have a good job", and that wealthy stay at home moms are "smart because they sacraficed their career for the wellbeing of their children."
I'm not saying this is right, but just pointing out the common perceptions. FYI, I've been a single mom with a child in daycare who had to work, and a stay at home mom with my husband supporting our family.
Anne Romney had aupair girls to help "raise her 4 boys" my older sister Sabrina was one of them. She came to the US to improve her English...the Romney's had two aupair girls...the other was from France...here name was
Mélanie and she was from Nice. Too bad you people do no research....Dommage!
One of the things i like about this show is that Chris will have conervatives who present a level headed argument for their point of view even if i don't agree with it. However Ms. Picket was NOT one of them , when the conversation went to Tryavon Martin, she immediatly went to the "New Black Panthers" line, i mean really, that's all you have to add to this the fact that four knuckle heads starved for attention want to scare Fox news veiwers.
I waited til after Sunday's show to write, to see if you mentioned this, but you didn't.
I felt vaguely dirty and sad after the Saturday show, watching a guest metaphorically putting her fingers in her ears and chanting "New Black Panthers" until the noise stopped seemed like a real insult to your show. I guess it's a tonic against beleiving that rational discussions such as you usually have will make any headway with those people, but I found it really wierd and depressing. ick
thanks
Oh yeah, just watched Jonathon Haidt on Book TV talking about liberal vs conservative psychology. I think he's a little full of s-- in his conclusions but his analysis and data are really interesting and helpful. You oughta have him on - and let some of your smarties chew on him for a while! :)
is Kerry Picket even literate? She stumbled over the simplest words and anytime she was questioned she stuttered some Right wing talking point and refused to answer a single question with anything resembling thought and insight. I actually felt kind of bad for her. Chris, love the show, even the discussions with most of your conservative guests, but this woman is dreadful, uninformed and inarticulate
To understand Kerry Picket, one has to take a step back and understand the intent behind her and most of the "conservative" commentary on any number of subjects.
"Liberals", "Progressives" or whatever name one wishes to tag them with enjoy the philosophical high ground on a number of issues as they pertain to - Race, the opportunity for marriage and to serve one's country regardless of being gay etc... "Conservatives" can claim high ground on abortion and a number of other issues, but the bulk of issues where one can say that they are in favor of the oppressed, the less fortunate, minorities, workers rights, etc., are considered "Progressive" issues.
This presidential political season is like any other, simply heightened as the battle is for the highest office in our country. 40% progressive, 40% conservative... the true fight is for the hearts and minds of the middle 20%. And conservatives refuse to lose them - common sense, science, empathy be damned.
Thus the cry from the Left for justice about Travon Martin has to be met equal measure, with "Rush to Judgment" and "constriction of gun rights" by the Right. There cannot be any issue, any point that is common sense, argued by the Left, that can be left unaswered by the Right.
When there is an obvious effort by the Right to constrict abortion, it is met by We are simply attempting to educate women as to their choices with that ultrasound...
"92% of the procedures of Planned Parenthood consist of abortion." This was a lie, but when Sen Cornyn's people were challenged, they stated that it was "not meant to be a truthful statement." Or when both Bachman AND Romney both say that 92% of the jobs lost were held by women - (another lie) this is meant to answer the War on Women claims.
The key is not the truth - but simply having an ANSWER - or counterpoint. Period... Because in this game, truth does not matter. Both sides are playing for keeps. I just wish the Left would push harder to expose the lies...
Chris - have a show on this. Have a Republican on, just to answer Fact Checked Lies.
Love Chris, love the show. I usually tape the show and watch when I can. I just watched Saturday's show (4/14) last night and was so appalled at Kerry Pickett. She was inarticulate, snarly, snarky, insulting, and added absolutely nothing to the discussions except sneers and eye rolls. Please, please never have her on the show again!!!!!
Love Chris, love the show! I just watched Saturday's (4/14) show last night as I tape the episodes and watch when I can. I am appalled at Kerry Picket! She was embarrassingly inarticulate, snarly, snarky, almost unintelligible and added nothing to the discussions except eye-rolls and sneers. Although I occasionally enjoy when Conservatives show the worst of themselves - which she certainly did - I prefer them not to mess with my Chris Hayes buzz
