On Sunday at 8AM ET on MSNBC we'll take an in-depth look at foreign policy. Earlier this week the Los Angeles Times released controversial photos of U.S. soldiers posing with dead Afghanis, marking another public relations disaster for the military in Afghanistan. We'll discuss the ongoing war there, as well as tensions between Israel & Iran, and more. Joining us will be:

Peter Beinart (@peterbeinart), senior writer at Newsweek/The Daily Beast.

Sonali Kolhatkar (@sonalikolhatkar), co-director of the Afghan Women's Mission and author of Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords & the Propaganda of Silence.

Rula Jebreal (@rulajebreal), Newsweek contributor.

Eli Lake (@elilake), senior national security reporter for Newsweek/Daily Beast.

Hooman Majd (@hmajd), author of The Ayatollah's Democracy: An Iranian Challenge and The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran.

Dimi Reider (@dimireider), Israeli journalist and blogger.
:: Blogged by Brett Brownell (@brettbrownell), Up w/ Chris Hayes web & video producer ::

I think you buried the led. You have "The world's most interesting man" (Hooman Majd) on on Sunday!
Stay thirsty my friend. ;)
Led is hard to bury, It ways too much.
Now we know: CISPA may pass monday and the internet doesn't have time to react. Cispa is Sopa + Patriot Act. And end to the free internet.
Up is uniquely suited to help . Up is the only show that can explain CISPA
Oh Eli Lake the professional Iran hater and Israel-firster.
Eli lake was one of the Firsters who got MJ Rosenberg fired from Media Matters. The White House could have backed him up but was too afraid.
I mean come on Eli Lake. If they can go that way. Why not have Mearsheimer and Walt on?....Moderates with facts
Eli Lake is a joke. Sure he is Israel-firster in every sense of the word but his intellectual capacity is on a par with a dead New York rat.
A request: please put the sleeve tugging, phone checking, eye rolling guest on the "do not invite back" list.
Thank you.
Beinart is interesting but soft pedaling the I/P situation. Has become a star and an enemy because he finally is getting close to taking a just stand Better late than never. His as well as others silence has been complicity.
When you going to have some folks on who have been on the front lines of the I/P issue for decades. Like Barghouti.
And on Iran when the hell are you going to have the Leveretts on? Does MSNBC have road blocks up against them?
Chris Hayes will your owners not allow the Leveretts on?
W
Chris wouldn't dare inviting the Leveretts. His MSNBC masters will nuke the show ...
My goodness girl slow down! LOL! Chris is breaking new ground by tackling issues that never get mentioned like who is trying to drag us into a new war that 90% of Americans refuse to back but Congress wants. He actually took on BP and all their lies about how the Gulf is back to normal. I don't know how that works with MSNBC getting millions of dollars to run BP, Chevron, and Exxon ads so often that I believe that tar sands project in Canada is safe as long as an environmentalist like Artis Brown is in charge ( rolls eyes).
No way. Chris needs to act like he is not working for MSNBC and really invite guest on his program who will focus on facts about this issue. Beinart has just decided to take a stance. Better late than never. Have the Leveretts on, Carter, Bryzinski, Noura Erakat, Barghouti...soft pedaling will just get us more of the same. And if you are willing to have Eli Lake on come on step out on the moderate side..Mearsheimer, Walt, Leveretts. If this is what stepping out looks like. Aye yi yi
I see Noura Erekat and Mustafa Barghouti on RT and AlJazeera. It would nice if they got an appearance on real media.
Exactly. If Hayes and his team want to bust out have these truth tellers on. Not Beinart who thinks because he finally made a decision to tell a partial truth that his silence all of those years is now redeemed. Those who have been silent have been complicit Israeli human rights crimes against the Palestinians
There is one question that I hope the distinguished guests can clear up for me. Back on August 17, 2010 in an article on Think Progress, Matt Duss interviewed John Bolton about the potential timetable for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. According to Bolton, Israel only had a few days left before the 1000 Megawatt nuclear plant at Bushehr got fuel rods and went online. Once the fuel rods were installed the plant could not be attacked anymore because of the potential catastophic release of radiation.
Well since that warning Bushehr has in fact been put online. Was Bolton wrong to warn about creating another Chernobyl or Fukushima? Would attacking the 5000 centrifuges at Natanz doom the 12,000 people who live there to either death or abandoning their homes? If Israel has the right to attack Bushehr, does Iran also have the right to attack and destroy Dimona?
Iran would turn Tel Aviv into a parking lot if attacked by Israel. Israel knows this quite well. This whole 'Israel plans to strike Iran' is just a kiddy bluff and political theater of the most absurdist form.
Iran isn't pursuing nuclear weapons, never has, never will. Because they can take Israel with conventional weapons any time any day.
Harlem I agree with you. Real missiles, not the mortars and homemade bottle rockets flying out of Gaza, would devastate TelAviv. Israel will not be "safe" until it invades Lebanon again and participates in the removal of Assad from power in Syria. Of course the notion of israel actually getting along with its neighbors is a leftist idea and a sign of weakness.
Eli Lake the Daily Beast. Beinart/Newsweek. Chris Hayes team do you folks have your heads up where the sun does not shine on the I/P issue? Newsweek and the Daily Beast would be a few of the last places I would go if I wanted accurate information on the I/P issue.
If you were really looking to get down into real issues in that conflict you would have Noura Erakat, Barghouti, Carter, on your program. Not stead fast Zionist. Why not call and see if you can get Dr. Gilbert on your program tomorrow. Bet he is in your neighborhood on his speaking tour. Or beam him in. Come on mix it up. Beinart and Lake. Really going out on a limb there. Choke. What about Mearsheimer or Walt? Would you get fired for having folks on who can state the brutal facts? Sure are playing it safe

Totally agreed.
Eli Lake is a certified Israel-firster who is, in my opinion, cerebrally challenged. Facts are Eli's #1 enemy.
I am used to only seeing Dan Gillerman, Mark Regev, and Michael Oren explain the precarious position Israel is faced with, and how the Palestinians are being treated too well and how HAAGHGmas, HAAGHmas, is so evil. I am practicing saying HAAGHmas like I am clearing my throat. My choice for a guests on Chris's show would be Norman Finkelstein. Noam Chomsky, Amy Goodman, and Glenn Greenwald. Of course Chris would be fired if he had all of them on at one time.
Forget about getting fired. If he invited Chomsky, Chris'd be sent to Gulag, pardon me, I meant Guantanamo bay.
Like your list of guest Joyce. Add Noura Erakat, Barghouti, Carter, Ilan Pappe, others who have been out on the front lines for decades
Chomsky and Finkelstein are against any boycott of Israel
What about Andrew Sullivan. His silence has been cast aside. And the man is brilliant. Have him on to talk about the I/P issue
He is one of our heroes too. He is a good liberal. Sullivan liked Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens had no use for Muslims or Islam. That was a moral failing on his part. We need to convert Toure' and Karen Finney, Martin Bashir and Krystal Ball to feel at least some empathy for the Palestinians.
Hooman Majd is very well-informed; he's written two excellent books on Iran and numerous articles (going back 2005 on HuffPost) debunking our incredibly biased views of Iran and Iranian people.
My only issue with him is that he's just too nice, too gentlemanly. A few weeks ago, on this show, he had a perfect opportunity to demolish that stupid warmonger whore, Ann-Marie Slaughter but he didn't; and to be fair, Chris VERY RUDELY CUT HIM OFF TOO.
As much as I like you Chris but shame on you!
Have noticed the "gentlemanly piece"
Hope Chris ask Beinart what took him so long? The situation on the ground has not changed for decades. In fact gotten worse for the Palestinians.
Questions Chris could ask.
If Israel wants peace why have they been expanding and building illegal settlements and illegal housing in E Jerusalem for decades?
Ask why Israel refuses to sign the NPT?
Wondering why most MSM outlets barely mentioned how well the P5+1 meetings went. MSNBC, CNN, NPR,Fox no one talked about the meetings. Chris Hayes you could take some questions from
http://www.raceforiran.com/iran-myths-perpetuated-by-the-wall-street-journal-and-the-new-york-times
IRAN MYTHS PERPETUATED BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL AND THE NEW YORK TIMES
Great question Kathleen. I would like to hear from a Republican or Eli Lake why the US should move its embassy from TelAviv to Jerusalem, and why not even George Bush or Ronald Reagan deemed such a move prudent. How can Ileana Ros-Lehtinen advocate the move without accepting responsibility for the enormous reaction that such an ill-conceived move would evoke? Why is Mitt Romney calling for the move? It would be every bit as explosive as Ariel Sharon ascending the Temple Mount. It would inflame the Arab world.
Have Dr. Gilbert on the Up program
http://mondoweiss.net/2012/04/mads-gilbert-eyewitness-to-cast-lead-says-gaza-remains-besieged-and-shattered.html
Mads Gilbert, eyewitness to ‘Cast Lead’, says Gaza remains besieged and ‘shattered’
Two years ago, Dr. Mads Gilbert (right) told me that his experience in Gaza during Israel’s assault in 2009 was the “most horrific experience” of his life, a grim honor previously held by Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, which Gilbert also witnessed. Gilbert spent over two weeks as one of the only foreign doctors in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead, and worked at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
Currently a professor of medicine at the University of North Norway, Gilbert is the co-author of the book Eyes in Gaza, which chronicles what he witnessed during the Israeli assault and invasion.
Today, Gilbert says Gaza remains in ruins, betrayed by the international community. The blockade of Gaza remains, and Israeli air strikes continue to kill civilians.
Gilbert, who is known for his deeply personal and riveting presentations on the Gaza Strip, recently concluded a speaking tour in the United States.
I caught up with Gilbert before his talk at Columbia University. We discussed his recent impressions of Gaza, the decision by the International Criminal Court to reject a probe into war crimes committed during Cast Lead, and much more.
Israel being an apartheid state is NOT interested in peace. What they're interested in however is stealing more lands from Palestinians - with our total approval.
Harlem, we know exactly what Israel is up to. Kathleen it is now too painful for me to constantly revisit the horrors of Gaza. The links you provide should be used by those brainwashed by Zionist Hasbara. The chicken farms, flour mills UN schools, white phosphorus, 1400 people killed, ambulances denied access to the wounded.
But it is all justified because the victims were notified 15 minutes (supposedly) by leaflet and phone.
Peter Beinart is a good guy, and so is Phillip Weiss. I wish him the best tomorrow morning.
I remember Lawrence O'Donnell had a powerful Israel Palestine moment when Netanyahu was speaking to Congress last year. Rachel has never dared to let her toe test the waters. Chris Matthews is strongly in favor of Bibi, and had a speaking tour in Israel. I doubt if Al Sharpton has any interest in the issue at all. Chris is our only hope.
Actually Dylan Ratigan has gone further than anyone on MSNBC. He had Glenn Greenwald on and he and Glenn took Cliff May down. Bet Ratigan was spanked by his producers. Ratigan mentions this conflict in clear concise ways. Although he has never had anyone else on who could talk about the issue honestly. His round table folks are not polished on different topics and play it way to safe.
Rachel was repeating the unsubstantiated claims about Iran a great deal. Lately she has stopped. She did have former President Carter on who went of course where she will not go. But she did have Carter on who of course speaks the truth.
Lawrence, Ed, Al, Martin Bashir, Chris will not touch the topic...and if mentioned they bark for Israel
Eli Lake was rude, crude and unworthy or being paid serious attention to because of his ignorant behavior. The host needs to do a better job of keeping control of these verbal bullies who are merely apologists for a specific point of view, I tune out almost as soon as the usual right wing suspects start this behavior. I expect Mr. Hayes to do a better job of "moderating" the debates that ensue from differences of opinion not arguing over facts.
The word EMPIRE has to come up, or we should wonder why it doesn't.
Chris, In talking about the war in Afghanistan, you commented that unlike Afghans, you do not have to worry about soldiers breaking into your home. It is clear that you do not live in an over policed neighborhood in the United States. Not all Americans can speak with such confidence. Ken
Wow, Rula Jebreal is great... about time UP got somebody with balls, even if it is a woman. She's great to look at too, toots. lol
Send me an e-mail and we'll take over the world together baby. I am spoact.blogspot.com
1. The strategic location of Afghanistan can scarcely be overstated. The Caspian Basin contains some $16 trillion worth of oil and gas resources, and the most direct pipeline route to the richest markets is through Afghanistan. Bridas Corporation of Argentina acquired production leases and exploration contracts in the region and by November of 1997 had signed an agreement with General Dostum of the Northern Alliance and with the Taliban to build a pipeline across Afghanistan. (Behan)
2. Unocal fought Bridas at every turn, even spurning an invitation from Bridas to join an international consortium in the Basin. Unocal wanted exclusive control of the trans-Afghan pipeline, and hired a number of consultants in its conflict with Bridas: Henry Kissinger, Richard Armitage (now Deputy Secretary of State in the Bush Administration), Zalmay Khalilzad (a signer of the PNAC letter to President Clinton) and Hamid Karzai. (Eventually Bridas sued Unocal in the U.S. courts, and won.) (Behan)
3. Unocal stayed on the attack until 1999, frequently wooing Taliban leaders at its headquarters in Texas (with Gov. GW Bush), and hosting them in meetings with federal officials in Washington, D.C. Unocal and the Clinton Administration hoped to have the Taliban cancel the Bridas contract, but were getting nowhere. (Behan)
4. Immediately on taking office, the new Bush Administration actively took up negotiating with the Taliban once more, seeking still to have the Bridas contract vacated in favor of Unocal. The parties met three times, in Washington, Berlin, and Islamabad, but the Taliban wouldn’t budge. State Department official Christina Rocca told the Taliban, at their last pipeline negotiation in August of 2001, just five weeks before 9/11, “Accept our offer of a carpet of gold, or we bury you under a carpet of bombs.” (Behan)
5. The pre-planned attack on Afghanistan, as we have seen, was meant to nullify the contract between the Taliban and the Bridas Corporation, to assure access to the Caspian Basin riches for American oil companies. It was a pure play of international energy policy. It had nothing to do, as designed, with apprehending Osama bin Laden—a pure play of security policy. And years later President Bush was astonishing in his candor, when he admitted “Osama bin Laden isn’t important.”
6. On October 7, 2001 the carpet of bombs is unleashed over Afghanistan. Hamid Karzai, the former Unocal consultant, is installed as head of an interim government. Subsequently he is elected President of Afghanistan. (Behan)
Was Dostrum mentioned in this documentary? That no other MSM outlet but Amy Goodman showed on her program. Not a mention anywhere else about the "Convoy of Death: The Afghan Massacre"
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3267.htm
Can we please not have any more appearances from Eli Lake? He is not only a loud mouthed neo-con, but a total arrogant pompous ass. His inability to have a rational conversation with anyone degrades the entire program.
If they are going that far right then why not moderates like Mearsheimer, Walt, Leveretts. Scholars focused on facts. What do Chris and his team have against folks focused on facts?
Iran, USA and Israel. There are many effective measures we can take short of war and more efficacious than sanctions.
So you're advocating for illegal and criminal measures in regards to Iran. So very enlightened of you.
Consider applying for Mossad.
Today’s show (Sun 4/22) was absolutely fantastic. Unlike many of folks leaving comments I don’t have the same depth of knowledge regarding any of the issues discussed today. That said I now have better understanding of them especially about Israeli. Thank you Chris for doing what you are doing. I will continue to set my alarm to keep watching.
Have not seen the show yet. At my daughters house, no TV. Waiting for it to be posted. Mar if you want to read more about the conflict read Edward Said, Ilan Pappe. Some great sites for more information.
http://www.raceforiran.com/
I agree. I am just an old guy living in suburbia Ohio, and not as informed as I would like to be. The show kept glued to the TV. I loved the debate with different points of views. I gave up on the Sunday talk shows long ago with all the talking points. Chris keep up the good work.
Eli did come off as a smug ass.
oops more sites
http://www.ifamericansknew.org/
http://mondoweiss.net/
Read Mearsheimer and Walts book "Israel Lobby"
http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n06/john-mearsheimer/the-israel-lobby
Oh yeah Foreign Policy Steve Walt
http://walt.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/04/06/staying_up_to_date_on_israel_palestine
Go watch any interviews with former President Jimmy Carter on the issue
Eli Lake was so personally offensive to other guests on the program, that if he actually had any good points to make, they were hard to find. He was rude and dismissive to people expressing other points of view, and doesn't deserve a place at a table of on a national TV program, in my opinion. Can he not debate an issue without being rude?
He's a Israel firster with absoutely zero class. Barn animals have more manners than this moron.
In my book, Eli Lake is a whore.
Eli a "rude, arrogant pompous ass, dismissive, loud mouthed neo con" Guess the Up program wanted to let the audience know who the Palestinians are up against. Eli is an example of how the state of Israel behaves. Just add massive stock piles of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons that go un inspected and undeclared and you get the picture
Absolutely loved to the point, direct, concise comments made by Rula. I'm in awe with her intelligence and integrity not to mention her epic beauty :)
great show, as always. it should have been called "up with rula jebreal"...
This is more a technical comment.
I understand that you have discussions among several passionate people.
But my hearing is not so hot and when people talk over each other, it's like the adults speaking on a Charlie Brown special, all I hear is WA WA WA.
Could you think about some way to only have one open microphone at a time?
Thanks
