The world needs to fight the continuing accumulation of atmospheric carbon and other greenhouse gases, and the disastrous result of climate change, with the same determination, grit, and creativity it brought to the world wars of the 20th century. The prospect of a permanently catastrophically changed world makes the coming "war" to save the immeasurably beneficent interglacial climate that industrial humanity has been busily dismantling for the last 150 years the most important and consequential global undertaking ever -- even more so than WWI and WWII.
The good news is that this 'war' need be fought only on the home front. Nobody will need to climb into foxholes and get gangrene, and shot at, or drop bombs on other people's homelands. "Planet War One" will require such relatively easy measures as
* energy conservation (think blackouts),
* rationing of carbon- and GHG-intensive consumer goods like gasoline and meat (think meat ration cards that the 'greatest generation' remembers, and gasoline debit cards that assure everyone a defined limited amount of fuel before the big per-gallon/liter tax kicks in),
* new work schedules (think four-day 36-hour workweeks to reduce commuting by one-fifth -- the part of the workday most workers hate most anyway! -- especially for America's many long-distance 'extreme commuters'),
* year-round daylight saving time (as a 'night person,' I hate DST, but I'll go along with it because its adoption will aid the wider use of intermittent renewable energy, according to a Stanford SAGE study in 2011), and
* the creation of a new "EZ Tax": a global financial transactions tax that uses the 21st century's brilliant computer financial networks to create a global Climate Change Prevention / Mitigation / Green Development Fund that will vastly improve the lives of the lower-carbon-per-capita people, typically the poor of both developing and developed countries, while making the comfortable lives of the highest-carbon peoples (hint: that's most of U.S.) more energy-efficient (the symbol for this new carbon-avoided currency should be the cent sign: carbon crossed out, carbon and climate degradation avoided!).
Time is running out on saving what is left of the interglacial climate period that has blessed the human enterprise since well before the rise of civilization some seven millennia ago. Planet War I -- the 'war' to save the interglacial Earth of humanity's entire history -- should be ginned up now, and formally started in the first week of August 2014, the centenary of the start of World War I. Perhaps by November 11, 2018, the centenary of the end of World War I, enough progress will have been made in achieving massive energy conservation and efficiency, reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions, developing and installing a wide range of sustainable non-carbon energy sources, reforesting denuded landscapes and ending annual rainforest loss, greening cities, whiteroofing buildings, "eco-driving" our cars and taking the trains, and so much more that is needed, that we can proceed to make these gains permanent in the framework of a globally-subscribed-to new League of Green Nations -- or a much-better-funded United Nations, UN Environment Programme, UN Population Fund, UNESCO, GEF, etc. -- and avoid the worst of the worldwide environmental armageddon that otherwise awaits us, a world that is a cross between Baghdad in the summer and New Orleans in Katrina, long before the fall of 2039 or the summer of 2045!

Water vapor is the main gas in the global warming....
Not CO2.
3 million years ago there was more CO2 in the atmosphere than today...
Next what do you think you breath out???? CO2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am starting to feel like a "gawker" at a train wreck.
Every week, I'm compelled to check the comments section to see what new, incredibly bat sh*t crazy, utterly ignorant, gobsmackingly redundant, right wing talking point you're going to trot out as a "rational refutation" to someone's premise.
You never fail to live up to your moniker, which really has me wondering if this isn't some kind of stunningly facetious form of "performance art".
I've met a couple of "true believers" over the years, but even they had SOMETHING (some issue that the Right had made their pronouncements on) that they didn't fully buy into the "Party Line" on.
So far, you seem to be incredibly consistent in your ability to see everything from the farthest regions on the right, and to quote the exact "passage and verse" from the rights "think tanks" as to "how this issue should be viewed and debated.
It's almost as if you are utterly incapable of "original thought" on virtually any subject.
It's either that, or you're a virtuoso performer.
The problem is that Chris Hayes and MSNBC no longer have even the slightest bit of credibility. Why do you think no one is watching????
Chris Hayes is the same jackass that said he has trouble calling our veterans heros. The heros that give this jackass the right to spew ignorance.
We do need to continue to reduce pollutants we add to the atmosphere but let's not panic. We need a sane approach. You can't continue to add yet another tax. We are taxed out.
It is obvious that YOU are not watching Up With Chris Hayes.
I watch, so I know for a fact that "no one is watching" is false.
You can look up ratings of the cable news channels and - during the week - the individual shows.
Unfortunately, on Saturday and Sunday, they don't break out the individual shows, so I don't know what the ratings are for UP. If you have a source for those ratings, please let me know.
The fuss over his statement about the use of the word "Hero" was thoroughly discussed and distorted and "pundit-ized". Since you brought it up, I would be happy to discuss it with you, but to summarize, it was much more complicated than you seem to think.
One of the mechanisms to encourage greenhouse gas emissions is "Cap and Trade", which was a Republican suggestion and is not a tax.
SoCalDogLover,
You are unfortunately living in "fantasy land" and listening to people who are lying to you if you believe:
We are actually living in a period of very low tax rates! Instead of listening to whoever is telling you that "taxes are so high", you need to look up the historic tax rates for yourself.
It's apparent that you don't understand what has happened with the tax rates, so perhaps YOU don't understand any of the other issues?
As for that "no one is watching" - well perhaps, no one YOU'VE been listening to is watching, but then are those people like me who are interested in separating the truth from the "propaganda" and we appreciate having UP to watch!
It's good to see MSNBC is highlighting Chris. Look, after the "heroes" kerfuffle, I got nervous. Shows this good aren't supposed to exist on cable TV and I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Viva l'Up!
Chris, I haven't seen anybody get off the bike that way, since the 50's. Companies should pay a green tax on everything they produce, in advance of sale. The tax should be commensurate with the cost of recycling and or disposal. Standards need to be in place to restrict the production or use of any product that exceeds zero recycling or disposal residual. Let's get on it. Please follow up with list of representatives running for office that have a sense about the issue.
I always find it humorous that when the elite who jet around the world, own multiple homes, and have a massive environmental footprint express any concern about the environment.
When the elite demonstrate any real leadership on environmental issues, then the rest of us will begin to care.
By the elite are you talking about people like Mitt Romney?
How many Mormons live in Williamsburg and how many Mormons work in Manhattan.
The NYC, prep school, Ivy League elites who want the rest of the U.S. to ride the bus, live in a cramp apartment, and send their kids to schools with gang bangers and illegal immigrants while they jet around the world, own multiple homes, and send their own children to very white, very non-diverse private schools.
Isn't is illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in NYC?
Only if you have a smoke and a 20oz drink in your hand!!!!
Dude looks like he is riding on egg shells
Hayes you goof, JMP will make $20-22 billion this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next it was their money...........
Furthermore they have more in home loans outstanding than that $2 billion loss!!!!!!
You really have no clue how banks make money ...
The over 8% unemployment is due to obamas failed policies....
I wish that Chris Hayes would ask Sharon - of ENRON - if she believed the story that the CEO of ENRON, Ken Lay, was dead when the Bush Administration said that he was. Why would the judge allow a convicted felon the right to go away for a weekend? With the Bush family anything is acceptable. I head a lady caller - on TV, soon after Ken Lay was supposedly dead and cremated, say that she lived in the place where Mrs. Ken Lay lived, and that Mrs. Ken Lay would NEVER open her door to anyone anymore I believe that Carl Rove is so evil that anything is possible with him. Look at how CR started his career.. He went to work for a Democratic politician. During the night he went into his office and typed out a paper saying that the Democratic politician would give cigarettes and liquor to anyone who voted for that politician. These are things I have heard or read. I believe that Carl Rove delights in being evil. My opinion.
Ho Lee Cow......
Even NASCAR doesn't turn this far left!!!!!
What a bunch of cry baby's.....
If the money was coming in to the DNC side, well hayes and his liberals buddies would not be saying a word about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If obamas policy's had worked, he would be getting the big $$$$$$$....
Please do not interpret any of my comments as derogatory. I would think MSMBC would be better served if your shows were aired on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at say 7:00pm - 10:00pm. The tenor of you program is very intellectual and probably best understood by the so called intelligentsia. But Chris you should try too catch more of the very intelligent class of viewers. I would suggest respectfully, that you have the habit of stating the "point" in a variety of alternatives. May I suggest you say it once by hitting the nail on the head. When dealing with subject like Wall Street greed, this is what it is, do not accept, your guest shilly shallying about, by saying the parties were acting more or less in good faith, BULL. The people in wall street when acting, are very intelligent people, and they consider all the options and their final determination to act is rooted in one place GREED. THIS ALL COMES DOWN TO A MORAL ISSUE OF RIGHT OR WRONG. John Quinn
jpg,
Completely agree! AND I agree we'd be better served if the program were on Saturday and Sunday nights instead of Saturday and Sunday morning! I would definitely watch it! I don't watch those "prison" shows and have no interest in MSNBC when they start that programming!!
UpWithChrisHayes and MHP are the reasons I got a DVR.
In response to Chris Hayes climate change ad, I suggest we encourage cities to make changes to accommodate the use of Neighbor Electric Vehicles (NEV); they are inexpensive, all electric and only go 25 mph. It would only be one step, but a relatively easy step.
Talking about Enron got me thinking.
Romney claims his experience in business means he would make a better President.
(The CEO of Enron was a business man.)
So let's think about how many different kinds of business people there are that have very very different experiences and skills.
For example - the owner of a small factory that has been in the family for generations. When faced with hard-times, that owner needs to do many things to keep the factory going:
If the owner does not do all this personally, the owner at least needs to direct others to get the accurate information. Then, the owner must understand all of the data (facts) and, based on reality, make the necessaries changes and improvements to save the company.
Romney's business experience may include some of these skills. I don't understand enough about what he did with Bain Capital to know for sure. He says he knows how business works. True - he made lots of money for his investors, whether the individual companies succeed or fail.
But does he have the ability to understand reality and analyze facts to save a "company" - i.e. the United States of America - where FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION?
THIS is what bothers me the most when I hear him say things that are demonstrably FALSE and not just mis-speak but over and over again.
How can a person that doesn't understand the problem hope to solve the problem!
How did yo do that. I have never thought of getting off a bike like that. I know for a fact that I could not do it. ?Can that technique work on getting off a horse?
