Rep. Todd Akin, the embattled Republican candidate for Senate in Missouri, endured withering criticism for repeating the spurious myth of "legitimate rape" during an interview in St. Louis this week, turning the presidential campaign briefly to the issue of abortion. And a riveting new essay by Ta-Nehisi Coates in The Atlantic examines the Obama presidency as evidence of "the false promise and double standard of integration."
Those are the stories we discussed on Saturday's show. But what caught your eye? We want to hear what stories you know now that you didn't know last week. Tell us what local or national stories you think people should know by leaving a comment on this post with a link and a way to credit you, and we may highlight your story suggestion online.

NPR's Storycorp told me how an inmate helped extinguish a forest fire and save a town, and how the townsfolk thanked him.
"It was so moving that I had to get up and go compose myself," Ross says. "That was my proudest moment, hands down."
Nice

I learned that the more constructive discussion on Race in Politics will focus on "what you did or are doing" rather than the "what you are" (racist). We need to look at the policy impacts on women and minorities to have a constructive dialogue. Racists are evenly distributed in both parties. Negative policy impacts on are NOT. Thank you Chris Hayes and @jsmooth995
What I know and don't know is why the Gawker story on Romney's finances hasn't caught much media attention... [ ]
I also learned this week that Warren Buffett is selling certain stocks right now because of a catastrophic event that will affect "Food, water, energy, money. Everything," A report on same has been given to the U.N., UK Parliament, and many Fortune 500 companies. See vital information:
“There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.” Warren Buffett
Now, we know taxpayers are paying for soldiers to get concussions and brain injuries before they even get to the war zone. The Army combatives program which is a mix of Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing and kickboxing is the Army's hand-to-hand, self defense training program. During training a high number of soldiers are receiving concussions due to the live hitting portion as part of the certification for training.

I found out hemp could replace gasoline.
And it's one of the 5 superfoods. Trees are good for oxygen and hemp is good for paper. Naturally, humans cut down trees for paper and criminalize hemp.

I'd like a panel discussion on how women get pregnant. Then after we learn"how", follow that with how to keep women from getting pregnant. Include the following items in the discussions: sex education for boys, zippers on pants, viagra and the cost and tax on ED meds, condoms, responsibilities of fatherhood, the idea that if you want to play you have to pay (for the consequences/results), how to report a rape, the shopping list to equip a nursery, the cost of raising a child, the cost to educate a child and why men should shut-up. Pick an all-woman panel please.
I learned (remembered) this week that the way to have a useful discussion on rape/abortion is to ask people what you are for - rather than what you are against. If you start this way, you will immediately find yourself on common ground.
What am I for - less rape & less abortion.
How do we get there? This is where our bias and preferences become visible.
I learned that the GOP is adopting the gold standard as part of their party platform. Please, let's have a serious discussion about how this would impact the economy - to disastrous results. For some reason, it's still highly attractive to many GOP/libertarians.
I learned that with the right lawyers, ol' monorail Mitt can wipe out hundreds of thousands of people's work and money and time. The RNC committed fraud in nearly every state, with Tampa being their crowning achievement.
Last week a Suffolk University Poll told us that of the 90 million unlikely voters, 2-1 they would vote for Obama. When we hear that America is a divided country it does not ring true. America is not divided into 2 sides, it is three sides. The third side are the people who are so disaffected that they do not participate in elections. And we have the Occupy movement, telling people to not participate. This is the core difference between Occupy and Tea Party, I was hoping that Occupy was going to energize that block of non voters. They could have been contenders but ended up in the margins. Politics is bringing a block of people to the game. Where is that block?
I am a white democrat from Alabama.
I believe we would be best served by you and the guests not beating us over the head with fast talking retaliatory rhetorick concerning republican remarks about racism.
Slow down and talk about the economic, social welfare and foriegn policy issues.

That Christie in NJ has really not done anything to help NJ come out of UI. The UI rate in NJ just hit 9.8% the highest since 1977. Being a laid off Civil Service Employment Counselor and not finding any work, now I know why. There is no programming to employ people in his state.

I am more and more convinced that men have little or no place in the discussion of rape and what constitutes or determines rape. The panel stated this so well today.
Jay Smooth talk about race (what they did versus what they are)
What people do may result in inequalities between races (sexes, sexualities, etc.). They are acting in a system that is not equal, and people's actions may reconfirm the current system (reinforce inequalities). They may not do so based on any desire to act in racist ways (may not think we should act in racist ways, may not be prejudiced or racist)... Instead, they may be acting from colorblind ideology... ignoring race in a system that is stacked against particular races. What they are doing then is racist (in terms of structural inequalities occurring) in a system where their behavior is stacked towards particular winners without doing so for racist reasons. WHAT THEY DO has racial implications, even when WHAT THEY ARE has nothing to do with why they did what they did. This is actually most well intentioned Americans (e.g. Demo1939 above).
***THE POINT: Acting in a system that is rigged requires that you consider how it's rigged before acting. IF you act in a rigged system without considering how its rigged, you will just further rig the system! Recreating systems of inequality.
BUT PLEASE, can someone tell me the article that Chris was referring to when he introduced Melissa Harris-Perry? PLEASE?
It's an article in The Atlantic, the magazine Mr. Coates works for and it's a great article. Here's the link:http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/09/fear-of-a-black-president/309064/3/
I learned this: if we (women) can't stop them (men) from getting us pregnant and forcing us to have the child, we should at least ban Viagra to stop a good portion of them (men) from raping us.
I learned that the Obama administration has been silent on racism, and has been from the beginning. Obama's one real comment was the Trayvon issue, which polarized it, and is a good example WHY he has remained slient on racism. I read the Ta-Nehisi Coates Atlantic Magazine piece (and saw your interview of him on Hardball). Like you, I learned a great deal about although we elected a "black" man to the White House, a big bunch of us sure aren't willing to accept it, the radicalization and the casulaties like Shirley Sherrod.
I learned that I had been under the naive assumption that racism wasn't as prominent in congress. The fact that there is still a signification percentage of congress members that stand against bi racial marriages, to the point where they would consider legislation on the issue, is alarming. This tells me that we need still have a lot of work to do with braking down racial stereotypes in this country.
I learned this week that the sixth great extinction is increasing at rates greater than we actually thought () It is not a matter of 'just' 1,000 species a year. The damage that we humans are doing as a race needs to be addressed and I'm sure we'll never hear a peep out of either presidential campaign about it. How do we bring about a conscious change in priorities? As we debate issues that I thought were behind us, such as a woman's right to decide what is best for herself without added societal and legal pressure, the fact that we continue to take more from the earth than it can recover from goes unmentioned.
Look, this idea of "men raping women can't possibly produce a child" is pure excuse/justification for marital rape. A cover-up for child prostitution and child brides. Protection for Misogynist party-drugging frat boys. Do they care more about a football coach raping boys and not about daily marital rape of women all over the world (probably one every 3 minutes, at least) because they really don't give a @!$%# about women? HELL YES! Men need to get out there and stop their brothers and friends and teammates and classmates and frat alumni and recruits. That's where men's role comes in - not in making/defending laws against women's rights. When have you posted on this to your networks, boys? STOP RAPE! EVERYWHERE, INCLUDING/ESPECIALLY IN THE HOME!
Still Left Wondering: about the Caymans and Swiss banking reporting requirements. If other nationals used Bain to evade tax reporting and thus paying taxes, could Americans also have done the same? What rules did Bain follow? What's the IRS position...we're on the honor system?
Another good, thought-provoking show. i'm not sure that I believe there are just as many racists in the Dem party as in the Repube party. I'm willing to accept that there are some racists in the Dem party, but it's clear that most of the haters are in the other party.
