On Saturday's Up w/ Chris Hayes, we'll dissect Mitt Romney's speech to the Republican National Convention Thursday night. We'll also discuss the theme of nostalgia that seemed to permeate the entire RNC, and we'll delve into the role of fact-checkers in the presidential campaign. Plus, we'll examine the rise of single-newspaper towns and the changing local media landscape in the all-important swing states.
Joining Chris at 8 AM ET tomorrow on MSNBC will be:
Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell (D), NBC News political analyst and CNBC contributor, author "A Nation of Wusses: How America's Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great."
Josh Barro (@jbarro), writes Bloomberg View's "The Ticker."
David Sirota, (@davidsirota) writes a nationally syndicated weekly newspaper column and hosts a radio show, "The Rundown with Sirota and Brown."
Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox), columnist for "The Guardian" and founder of the political blog Wonkette.
Bob Herbert (@bobherbert), distinguished senior fellow at Demos and former New York Times columnist.

Well 2 more hours of "look how smart I am, and how stupid the rebuplicans are"
After Romney win this fall, how long do you think this show will last?
By the way, how are those book sales LOL...
If Romney wins how long do you think the country will last
if he really follows his right wing staff?
Or how much more shame will we feel?
The USA will be around for a long time. No one can under mine the USA, no one party can.
Romney talks about the next 100 years for the USA, obama & the liberals talk about the past 100 years.
The economy is at a stand still, and has been for the past 4 years now.
Obama had his turn at the wheel, he failed, get over it already.
It's time for a real change, the last "hope & change" did not work at all.
If the puppet Willard wins it will be like the Talaban and Shera law are in charge. His owners, Big Oil and Big Ins Big Money who can't get enough will turn this Country into a coldharted dark place.and he will start another war I am a Vietnam vet we don't need Vietnam 3 and 4 after Iraq.
Obviously, the "You didn't build that..." quote was to say, "you didn't build that alone", which is true because there is no business without customers, safe commerce, and respected currency. There may be some latent racism behind phraseology (and policies) of Republicans, but I wouldn't play that up because crying 'racism' sounds like crying. The negativity of the Republican "Us against Them" mentality about almost everything is better because almost everybody is one of Them for the Republicans.
I very much appreciated Chris Hayes comments about the generational oligarchy.
Personally, I think the thrust of Samantha Bee's interviews at the RNC should be the only Republican position necessary to end this election.
Tell that to Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett,
You guys are so out of touch with the real America. On election day just remember Chick-fil-A.... on steriods. Normal people dislike Obama 1000 times more than they dislike same sex marriage. Romney is the next President and this country needs him.
"Not all white Americans are biased...but all white Americans have been affected by bias." Lerone Bennett, Jr. It takes a long time to look within and see bias and try to rid ourselves of this poison. White males have the most work to do. Mr. Romney appeals to them when ever he says "real American" Bob Herbert in his quiet way is trying to help out...listen to Bob...carefully.
Paul Ryan can run off to his priest and confess every lie...I checked Mormons ability to do that and yes...Mormons can also confess and be excused.
Josh Barro makes a good point that not every political conflict between conservatives and President Obama is racially motivated, but I do believe that it effects the degree of vitriol, hatred and disrespect of the President.
If John Kerry or Hillary Clinton had been elected and given a speech similar to Obama's address to congress in 2009, Joe Wilson would have never cried "You Lie" during the speech. The lies about welfare reform currently being espoused by conservatives have an obvious racial component. Yes all of the rhetoric about the President having to "learn to be come an American", that he is an "Kenyen anti-colonial radical", that he needs to be lectured to by Eastwood and that Obamas only response to his criticism would be to tell Romney to "go eff himself".
Other liberal Presidents and politicians have been criticized by conservatives through the decades, but the hatred of this President has been greatly amplified by racial resentment of far too many Americans. It is disgusting and conservatives should be ashamed of their lies.
Right on, DJS ...also, too many white males are caught up...even Clint who has money and power and had lots of wives felt the need to talk down to the "boy president" in the little chair, but that backfired on Clint, Hollywood and The "Man" Mr. Romney. A white uppity celebrity...does it to himself! His wife and children should keep an eye on him.
As whites become a minority in our country...it is hard for males to feel that they can get along losing some of their power and and not being rewarded for their "whiteness," and that must frighten them.
Paul Ryan, chairmen of the house budget committee.
Keep in mind the government is running with no budget, thanks to the senate.
Obama care killing jobs.
More people out of work today than when obama took office.
Fewer compaines today than when obama took office.
More people on food stamps today than when obama took office.
Fewer banks today than when obama took office.
Fewer home owners today than when obama took office.
Over 8% unemployment for the past 3 years now.
Sooner of later obama has to own up to this economy, and stop blaming GWB.
So, Mr. Geko, Greed may not have been so good after all...esp. for Wall Street Gekos.
The economy is in the tank.
What on earth are you talking about? a 1980's movie?
Ho-lee, you need a much, much bigger forum. You need to be front and center, under the proverbial Big Top. If only there were a traveling carnival where your credulity and confusion could be showcased under a big revivalist tent. A GOP savant. A wunderkind. The Marjoe Gortner of evangelical conservatism. Better yet, remember Trumbo's hero in "Johnny Got HIs Gun?" He begged to have his physical "limitations" put on display in the name of protest; you too should beg to have your limitations showcased for the greater good of society. Limitations like yours come along once in a generation.
Maddow has been proved to be a lire by politifact many times.
The problum is she will not admit to being wrong.
Just like hayes, remember the mike daisy deal? hayes made that guy out to some uber hero.
LOL... " we are journalists" that made me laugh
Adn so is ed schultz, ralph madcow, MHP, and so on.
to Chris- yr show wins my most intelligent award
originally sent to npr's Susasn Stamberg re 9/1 showq
You interviewed a person abt sad songs- and he made the point that sadness- melancholy- COULD be a good thing!
Examine npr- w its incessant never negative, always cheerful bordering on the boosteristic, uncritical coverage.
Right wing radio is incessantly negative and uncritical- never accepting negative callers?
NPR ends up enabling a lot of bad things- like war- w never an uncharitable word when discussing it.
Do you see what I mean?
Would you be able to confront a politician and tell him or her he/she is a lier? for example? when you know he/she is?
My point to Chris is this: the truth is the truth- if you are a scientist- I think yr job should be to expose the untruthful- do not be shy to be a fact checker.
Thus you would b able to ask a ryan or a romney- "aren't you lying?" You are too polite by far (because you have advertisers?)
I admire you and Chris Matthews- but I find that you come up short in the "overall analysis" eg.- what about capitalism. Do you realize that there are orphans picking through dumps in Calcutta and Rio today?
A hack from solan.com talking about people printing what they want to LOL.........
And the host working for the nation magazine LOL.
Both leftwingnut rags. That print what they want to, regardless of the truth.
Frontier Days are not in Denver chris!!! it takes place in Cheyenne Wyoming!!!
God these NYC big brains.
Ask Randell about the EPA and the war on coal!!!!
WOw! Ed just schooled this school boy ...nice!
This is what I got out of "We Built This".What I understood the President to say is someone help you build your business regardless of who it was. Government, parents, friends, hiring people, etc. But the most important person to help build a business is the CUSTOMER. If there are no customers to buy your product or service regardless of how you open the doors to your business will be out the window if there are not bodies coming in to make a purchase. Just think of how many people buy Clint Eastwood movies he starred in or produced. There are a lot of movies that bombed and went straight to cable or local television because there were not enough people liking the movie or going to purchase the movie. Look at TV shows and the number that make it to the next season and the number that don't. It all goes back to the people that watched the show and the number of people that did not. That works in all business regardless of who helped. So yes you did not build the business on your own. There are people that helped you build your business. The only thing is your own is the idea. Ask Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and others if they did not have help building their business. All the Republicans talked about is the President said the government helped build the business. Maybe they did, maybe they did not but somebody helped. And most of all guess what people on Welfare make purchases too as once again the customer.
Great second hour today (9/1). The point about runners in the marathon with Ryan is key. Many people still deciding how to vote are HIGH information voters. Yes, newspapers are losing ground as third-party validators. It's not just a question of newspaper ownership. It's newspaper economics and media technology. Nostalgia for newspapers is fruitless. But the Big Lies still can be exposed. So can the Big Truths. Third-party validators, mostly on-line, are highly specialized these days but nonetheless trusted. Meanwhile, Obama needs to find credible messengers on-line, expressway billboards, sports telecast advertising, even CNBC ads -- placements where high information voters dwell.
Another way of looking at the Romney Campaign as a "Leveraged Buyout". The investors in the Romney hedge fund are Sheldon Aledson, the Koch Bros, Bob Perry, the Hampton donors party, etc. They are looking for a return on their investment, big time. Romney has demonstrated his competence in that sphere. Is there any reason that is not his goal? After 4 years there will be an IPO and the debt ridden corpse of this country will be handed back to us.
We should look at this election as the GOP candidate for the Sheriff of Nottingham who will extract the last drop of the Middle Class's bank accounts to their investors leaving the MC only hope of salvation in a theocratic after life.
Anna Marie Cox ...Yowsa, shazam, boing, boing, boing, ka-bing, pow, and you betcha...
Josh Barrow's odiuous glaring and unflatteringly condescending and overbearing staring at Miss Cox during the intro put the dude on my poop list. What a schmuck. What a punk.
Maddow was brought up on the program this am., whom recently comfessed that she is not a Democrat. After years of weaving a yarn of her "liberalism" and the assumption of her party loyalty, Maddow came out and said she is not a Democrat. Dems. knew this after Maddow's Benedict Arnold year of Obama bashing in 2010. We figured out that Maddow was sandbagging the nation, that she is disingenuous, and that she's a good corporate liberal. The question now in the wake of Maddow's narcissistic, unreasonable, deceptive and self serving subterfuge is; Whom among MSNBC hosts is an actual Democrat. O'Donnell and Al Sharpton fit the bill. Maddow doesn't. What about Chris Hayes? Democrat or corporo-liberal, that is the question. He doesn't say he's a Democrat, he says he's a liberal. 80% of Americans think politimedia is unrespectable. Maddow is one reason for this development, among true Democrats. David Gregory is another reason. Corporately contrived and manipulated presentations of modern "news" media are unrespect worthy. We truly are aware of the corporate contrivance of news. We know that corporo-media hires corporo-news contrivers and manipulators in large part. So, what's up with Chris Hayes? Why doesn't he say he's a Democrat? Why doesn't he say he's not a Democrat? We know that many folks allready see and have remarked upon the corporate contrivances of the Chris Hayes show. What's up with Chris Hayes? Does he claim any allegiance to a party or is he a free floating neurotic like Maddow?
Hayes brings info and energy and awareness and energy and arm waving and pen pointing and energy and not much humor, and energy and arm waving and territory claiming and energy and info and this morning his deep throat moment came across as vulgar which was then followed by strained, deep throated guffawing with the gay go go club dancers in t's and dress slacks.
Boy do I wish there were some way to contact Chris, Josh, et al. without tweeting, being on Facebook, or joining what it is really a pretty inane discussion here. But, on the off chance that this gets back to Chris and Josh, I want to say that Josh has become my favorite guest on this show. (I would also like to see more of Reihan.) I'm not sure whether or how Josh labels himself, but I find his thinking truly independent, sharply reasoned, and provocative in the best sense of that word. As a socialist who compromises my principles to vote for the merely and squarely liberal Democratic party, most of the time, I get tired of the usual liberal bromides so many of the guests serve up on these shows. Of all the guests, I get the sense that Josh would be the most interesting to discuss issues with; even though we might disagree on just about everything, Josh appears to always listen to others thoughtfully, and disagrees without resorting to ridicule and bullying. We really, really, really need more thoughtful conservatives like Josh and Reihan, rather than more of the fools on parade at the Republican convention.
