Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another – from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball – imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters.
How did we get here? With "Twilight of the Elites," Christopher Hayes offers a radically novel answer. Since the 1960s, as the meritocracy elevated a more diverse group of men and women into power, they learned to embrace the accelerating inequality that had placed them near the very top. Their ascension heightened social distance and spawned a new American elite--one more prone to failure and corruption than any that came before it.
You and your show are a breath of fresh air. However please please check out your audience.
Am I the only one who desperately needs and appreciates a thoughtful conversational type of political show .........BUT feels cheated because you and/or your producers insist on including the token argumentive conservative?
With the airwaves saturated with conservative blather, most anyone taking the time to tune into your show knows perfectly well what their beliefs are.....
Please share with me the airways that are saturated with conservitive blather... Other than Fox and the raido it's Kiss Obama's Butt all day all the time.
got Hannity?
then you might watch the balloon drop at the RNC convention the saccharine " let's just shut up and watch"
Or if you have to have a token republican, does he have to be that one. He was rude and condescending and talked over the three. I am so angry at republicans right now. Angry and very scared. So it would be nice if you could find a nice one.
Second point - The woman on your show who was trying to explain that women have a real issue and it is part of the uptick for Obama right now. She started with Akin then the conversation turned to the Ryan pick being definitive. One of the truly scariest of the congressional republicans BECAUSE he is completely tied to Akin and the social change of the very far right. Yes, it is medicaid because the republicans are leading the press around by the nose in many ways AND it is very important, but I am telling you as a woman the threat to contraception, abortion, the budget that would hit women hardest, so many things ...it IS a war on women it was the Ryan pick that made that crystal clear.
Didn't you notice the rep. wanted it to be about medicare too? That's a clue. He didn't like the woman's issue talk and it ticked him off. Clue again.
Ryan made it crystal clear that Mitt was not going to "wink and say don't worry like republicans have always done." 2010 was a wake up, Ryan was the promise.
Romney is horrible on so many things: his campaign, what he really thinks about Americans, foreign policy (Oh God!), but it is Ryan who makes them both scary.
Actually, you know what? I just went back to watch the next segment and I just straight up will not watch that man again. Chris says nice things (even though Brown's desire to tie Professor has to do with elitist fear crap) and he hands of to that man and he starts brown ins moderate and she.... I left.
It's not that I do't want to hear conservative opinions. I read Frum and the like, but he was just too much to bear. I will always be a Maddow fan, but if this is the way it's gonna be... no, I got better things to do. Just sayin
Great 120 minutes of why you should hate America by Chris Hayes.
Democrats still believe that repeating a lie becomes a precieved truth if repeated enough. That used to be true before Obama. For this strategy to work as it did with Clinton, Obama must tell a truth once in a while to set up the fact that he has that ability.
Great Show, Irshad is a great panelist,(she's had my respect from Marches on Washington in the 90's). and I approve your showing some ANGER and FIGHT with your working poor rant.
Hey occupy, why don't you go occupy a job!!!!!!!
None of this will matter a bit if the voting machines are tampered to switch candidates or the results are hacked later on. Diebold anyone? The vote against paper backups? Voting machines mysteriously locked in a school basement with the key gone on vacation with some official? How about a chunk of votes mysteriously "showing up" as they did in the Wisconsin recall?
Why isn't anyone remarking on these? All I hear, which is bad enough, is Citizens United, voter suppression and voter intimidation via True the Vote. But all of that is pre-election day. Why isn't anyone investigating the election day potential to lose this election in a big, big way, probably undetectable? Rs know they are losing. To what don't you think they might stoop to to win?
What does ho-lee-cow have to say about the attempts by republican politicians and right wing organizations to supress the vote and especially in swing states? Pure patriotism?
Get real!
I can understand the pugilistic appeal of focusing on the Obama Romney contest, but can we please get enough distance from the shiny objects of the present to see how the world will look for the President in January with the new Congress? Or is it too intellectually challenging for MSNBC producers, hosts and guests to think that many moves ahead?
As an exercise, why not have someone like Russert on to talk about how realistic Pelosi's optimism is about taking back the House. She made that claim this past week, yet it got no serious attention. The lady who got health care reform done gets that little attention? Are you out of your fricking minds? Anyway, Russert or any other good reporter from the Hill will spell out why the prospects are tough. Further, they could offer some insight on the DCCC's inaction in the face of the GOP's aggressive predation on the Blue Dogs.
Just take a look at ads like those of the NRCC against Larry Kissell in NC (youtube). Kissell was leading polls there in March. Now, the DCCC is pulling all their ads. Really? Wtf. The President is sitting on a billion in funds he doesn't need. At least put some internet advertisements up. They are slaughtering him- using John Edwards in the above ad to kill him with moderate voters.
Jane Mayer would be excellent to underscore how a few million can have decisive effects on national congressional races. Consider for example her coverage of the Art Pope's successful manipulation of elections with well financed disinformation campaigns.
Are their alternatives to the socially conservative Blue Dogs? How about the socially progressive, fiscally conservative New Democrat coalition?
It is depressing watching the coverage of this election. Hayes' show made a stab at the "downballot", but it was surprising how little of the reality of the situation was expressed.
Let's try and step back and get a 10,000 foot view of this. The main event drawing all the attention seems to be the presidential race. That is delusional. Sure, that is what will get the most viewers. The real battles- the ones that matter are not in the presidential race, not even the Senate races (though important). The decisive wars are being fought with advertising blitzes against Dem moderates house candidates in purple states.
Far from being a sideshow, these Houses races represent the crucial battle. They will mean the difference between whether Obama will get any progressive legislation through Congress or not.
Retaining the White House and minor control of the Senate gets you the status quo. And that is victory for the GOP, because they will be able to replay the same defensive strategy of obstructionism.
Obama will achieve nothing in the next two years, and then will be a lame duck.
2 years of success, and 6 years of "failure". Does that sound like progressive victory to you?
I didn't think so, and that is how the GOP intends to hold the line whatever the cost to the economy or environoment. That stacks the deck in favor of Christie or Jeb Bush in 2016.
Come on you guys. Think.
I look forward to seeing Rudi Guiliani vs Chris Hayes Round 2 and will bet that Rudi scores another knockout or TKO....anyone want to take that bet.
