U.S. Army Tested Chemicals on Cities, Low-Income Residents

Newly disclosed documents have revealed details on how the U.S. military carried out testing of chemicals on major U.S. cities during the 1950s and 1960s. Sociologist Lisa Martino-Taylor of St. Louis Community College says zinc cadmium sulfide was sprayed in several cities without residents’ knowledge. The most densely sprayed area appears to have been a housing complex for low-income people in St. Louis.

Lisa Martino-Taylor: "It was pretty shocking, the level of duplicity and secrecy. Clearly they went to great lengths to deceive people. There’s a lot of evidence that indicates that people in St. Louis in the city, particularly in minority communities, were subjected to military tests that was connected to a larger radiological weapons development and testing project."

Palestinian Leader Condemns Settler Attacks in U.N. Address

Also speaking before the U.N. General Assembly Thursday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned Israel over Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories, saying more than 500 settler attacks had been carried out on Palestinians since the beginning of the year. Abbas also vowed to continue seeking non-member status at the United Nations for Palestine. In his condemnation of Israeli government policy, Abbas invoked the term “Nakba,” or “catastrophe,” which refers to the period around Israel’s declaration of statehood in 1948 when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced from their homes.

Survey of Arab-Americans highlights drop in support for Obama

The Arab-American community still largely supports President Barack Obama, but 15 percent of Arabs who voted for Obama in 2008 have not declared their support for him this year, according to a new poll released by the Arab American Institute (AAI).

The hopes that Obama would be an “honest broker” in trying to get Israel and the Palestinians to reach a deal have not panned out. While Obama came out against illegal Israeli settlements in the beginning of his term, pressure from Israel and its advocates in the U.S. ultimately caused the president to back down. And Obama has lavished military and economic aid on Israel while protecting it from diplomatic opprobrium.

Another issue weighing on the minds of Arab voters is civil liberties. “What happened in New York, with the NYPD surveillance program, continues without any criticism at all,” Zogby noted in an interview. “If you live in Michigan, cross the border as many do, if you come into Miami airport, if you come in New York airport, you can expect discriminatory treatment and that’s unacceptable and people feel it. So does that resonate? Sure it does.”

But the drop in Democratic support could harm Obama’s re-election chances. One recent study on Muslim-American political participation notes that the Muslim population in Florida and Michigan is large enough to swing the vote.

In a new report, the human rights organization said California is holding prisoners in extreme isolation – with no fresh air, natural light, direct human contact or programs – for years and even decades, and leaving them with little hope of ever emerging from the confinement.

I was in a union for about half my career. One of the greatest advantages is that I believe quality is much higher in union shops. Not a fan of public sector unions though unless their contracts get to be voted on by the citizens.

Isn't it funny that the GOP has been claiming that there is voter fraud going on in America. Now we know who is responsible for all the fraud going on. It has just been announced that the Republican National Committee, (That's right The GOP themselves) is behind voter fraud in states all across America. They hired a consulting company to register voters and they paid them over $1.3 million Dollars to commit these frauds and now they are trying to distance themselves from the fraud. They will do anything to steal this election and enslave all of the Poor and Middle Class Americans in this country.

They are trying to stop the elderly, College students and the lower and middle income people in this country so that the super rich in this country can get more while the start more wars and put all of us in danger because of their greed. When is enough enough. How much must they have before they are satisfied. I was listening until a few minutes ago about the chatter about the effects of the stimulus on the economy, both in general and specific ways.

I am 77 yeas old, a widow, and my late husband and I scrabbled to save enough to supplement our social security. Six years ago, (before my husband died) we were getting 5.3% interest on our savings, which provided enough for a few extras like magazine subscriptions, dental care and home maintenance. Now I am getting 1/4 of 1% (if that)...essentially NOTHING. And the government is content to ride out this depression on the backs of elderly savers like me. And, at the same time, we are being accused of parasites for accepting Social Security and Medicare.

Does anybody care to comment on how, while other elements of the economy are being subsidized, we are being stolen from?

Mrs. Romney's biggest concern if her husband were elected President would be for his mental well being. Mrs. Romney is voicing concern for her husband's emotional stability. Wow! Join the crowd. Romney seems addled and unbalanced. He's off kilter. He seems as if he may indeed be psychoactively medicated. Ya' gotta wonder if he'll make it to the election. Mrs. Romney just enabled a trap door for Mitt. He could perhaps disappear from the race if his stability is in question, and Mrs. Romney just put the issue on the table as to the emotional stability of the Mittster. Ann's questioning of her hubbie's stability seems to immediately disqualify Mitt from reasonable consideration for the highest office in the world. Ann Romney in effect just declared her husband to be unfit for the office due to questions regarding his emotional/mental well being. One now wonders if Mitt will resign the race. .

First, One of the overlooked aspects of M$tt$ 47% comments was that he was asking for or implying that needed/wanted the non-47% to be open-minded and tolerance of his ideas and give him a fair listening to…while in the next sentence he condemns others for not giving him a chance. His condemnation shows he is extremely intolerant (of others situation) and closed-minded. If independents want what they say they want (i.e. people to listen, work together, and solve problems), then M$tt$ is not their man. Second, Democracy Now did some reporting last week (9/20) on Bain Capital closing a factory in Illinois and moving the jobs to China. Nobody else has picked up the story. Why? Third, Obama has changed Washington. Bush’s idea was an Ideology drives policy and then cherry pick some evidence if you have a few minutes. Obama changed that to evidence driving policy. Conservatives like the evidence to fit the ideology (notice them freaking out about the polls), and M$tt$ will return Washington to the days of Bush.

Peksa mentioned the maker of socks has less value to the final product than that of the NFL refs. That brings the value of unions of greater importance to the worker. No union...the worker is gone...period. With a union...the value of the sock makers to the corp increases a hundred or thousand fold; so at least it gives them a fighting chance.

Whatever forces of moderation exist in Iran will disappear when the first cruise missile or smart bomb strikes Iran! The Iranians will prove to be a different enemy than the Iraqis with long term asymmetric warfare possible on a global basis, not restricted to the Middle
East but to include Europe and North America. NO WAR WITH IRAN!

Mitt's carefully contrived self image is now facing the harsh light of reality. Mitt's wife is questioning his emotional stability. Mitt is coming face to face with ..... himselves. Sometimes folks who spend their lives confusing and contriving may themselves become confused and contrived in older age. They themselves may lose track of actual reality after a life of confusing reality with contrivance. Mitt has a carefully crafted self persona of caring and religiosity and truthfulness which simply does not coalesce with much of the actual reality of his professional life and his obvious dishonesty and devious deceitfulness. Romney presents a personality dichotomy and his subconsciousness, along with his wife, is perhaps noticing the schism. In reality Mitt Romney may simply be psychologically unfit for office.

I was a bit dismayed while listening to your union discussion. Please see a few blogs and posts which discuss the concerns in reference to our teachers' unions and the referee "CRISIS".

And this is the sad state of our nation!

Isn't it ironic that the news stations and many fans are more upset about a second-rate referee making a bad call in a football game, but they are not so worried about untrained, novice TFA teachers practicing on our kids for 180+ days and then ditching the profession?

No wonder the teaching profession is doomed.

Will the politicians and corporate reformers be working to dismantle the referees' union as fiercely as they are the teachers' union?

Jersey Jazzman takes note of the media hysteria about those NFL referees who replaced the experienced, unionized referees. Even Governor Scott Walker was upset when the inexperienced referees made a call that led to a loss by the Green Bay Packers.
Do we need "Referees for America" to step in when the unionized referees go on strike? Apparently the football lovers of America say no.
Maybe experience and qualifications matter.
And remember how the media piled on teachers in Chicago for their outrageous salaries? Was it $56,000, $74,000?
Well, a reader sent this important information:
The refs make $150,000 for 6 months of part time work. They want $200,000. I haven't seen those numbers thrown around in the media. Every time they talked about the teachers in Chicago they threw out the bogus $74,000 average salary. Then some pundit would always add they only worked 8 months out of the year as well. Everyone bemoaned the greedy overpaid teachers.
I was watching Morning Joe yesterday and Joe Scarboro, who couldn't get enough of trashing the teachers in Chicago last week, was up in arms over the greedy NFL owners refusal to pay for experienced refs.

Chris Hayes asked his rightie guests if they are Republicans to which they replied affirmatively. Chris Hayes on the other hand has not identified himself as a Democrat. He instead uses the term liberal, but does not identify himself politically.

Why?

Does Joy Reid identify herself as a Democrat? Has she stated that she is a Democrat? She did say that her father was a conservative. MSNBC seems to prefer quasi Democrats to actual Democrats. Why is that? One obvious answer is that corporate American political media, ala MSNBC, prefers lefties who will firmly smack around Democrats and President Obama from the left, ala Maddow,Chris Hayes and Ed Schultz, as well as offering criticism of the right. What MSNBC lacks is actual Democrats. Gobama!

Conservatives will continue on their journey through the back of their mind. A journey that is necessary only because they are so obstinate of taking even one step towards the left. Therefore, they must continue moving to the right through libertarianism, through liberalism, and finally back to the middle of the continuum which we recognize as democracy. They're just crazy. Plain and simple. Crazy.
